This Day in The History | India Unveils New Parliament Building: A Symbol of Self-Reliance

On May 28, 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India's new Parliament building, calling it an auspicious occasion and a step towards realizing the dreams of freedom fighters. The new building symbolizes the dawn of a self-reliant India and features the installation of the 'Sengol', representing the transfer of power. The new Parliament is special for its design themes: the Lok Sabha on the peacock, India's national bird, and the Rajya Sabha on the lotus, the national flower. The new Lok Sabha has a seating capacity of 888, up from 552 in the old building, while the new Rajya Sabha can accommodate 384 members, compared to 250 previously. For joint sessions, the new Parliament can seat 1,272 members. Part of the Central Vista Project, the new building covers 64,500 square meters, which is 17,000 square meters larger than the old Parliament.

On May 28, 1883, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, also known as Veer Savarkar, was born in Maharashtra. He is credited with developing ‘Hindutva,’ the political ideology of Hindu nationalism. Savarkar defined Hindutva as the identity of those whose fatherland, motherland, and virtuous land are all in India. His strong views on Hindutva often stirred controversy. In 1909, after Savarkar’s brother Ganesh Damodar Savarkar was sentenced to Kala Pani, his associates retaliated by killing AMT Jackson, the District Magistrate of Nashik. Letters from Savarkar were found with those arrested for the murder, implicating him despite his absence from India. On June 29, 1910, the British Secretary of State arranged for a special ship to bring Savarkar back to India. On July 6, 1910, while the ship was docked in France, Savarkar attempted an escape by swimming to shore but was recaptured. Convicted on December 24, 1910, Savarkar received two life sentences, totaling 50 years. He was imprisoned in the Andaman Cellular Jail on July 4, 1911, enduring severe hardships that only strengthened his resolve, earning him the title Veer Savarkar. After India’s independence in 1937, Savarkar became President of the Hindu Mahasabha. He was later implicated in the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi on January 30, 1948, but was acquitted due to insufficient evidence. Savarkar’s revolutionary contributions to India’s freedom struggle are unforgettable. He passed away on February 26, 1966, in Mumbai.

On May 28, 2008, Nepal declared itself a republic, ending a 240-year-old monarchy. Nepal had been ruled by various dynasties, including the Gupta, Kirat, Somavanshi, Lichchavi, and Suryavanshi. A constitutional monarchy was established in 1959, allowing for an elected Prime Minister while the King remained the head of government. Despite this, real power stayed with the monarchy. A civil war against the monarchy began in 1995, leading to the establishment of a republic. Following the end of the monarchy, a Constituent Assembly was formed, and a new constitution was implemented. In the 2017 elections, KP Sharma Oli became the Prime Minister. As of now, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, known as ‘Prachanda’, is the Prime Minister of Nepal.

Volkswagen, the world-famous car manufacturer, was founded on May 28, 1937, under the control of Hitler’s Nazi Party. Hitler tasked Austrian engineer Ferdinand Porsche with designing the first Volkswagen car, which debuted at the 1939 Berlin Auto Show. World War II halted production, but the company revived post-war despite its Nazi ties, facing challenges in markets like the U.S. Volkswagen overcame these hurdles by launching the Beetle in America, which became immensely popular. By 1972, over 15 million Beetles were sold. In 2019, Volkswagen announced the end of Beetle production, with the last car, a denim blue Beetle, produced in Mexico in July 2019. This final Beetle is now displayed in a local Volkswagen museum.
