The ‘All Eyes on Rafah’ Social Media Surge
On May 28th, several Bollywood celebrities took to social media to share a message about Rafah, a region in the Gaza Strip, resulting in over 33 million shares of an AI-generated image with the text “All Eyes On Rafah” on Instagram.
This campaign featured actors and actresses such as Malaika Arora Khan, Sonam Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, and many others, who collectively amplified the message. However, some celebrities, including Huma Qureshi and Kareena Kapoor, chose to share a UNICEF post calling for a ceasefire instead.
While this campaign gained significant traction, it also sparked controversy and accusations of selective outrage.
What Happened in Rafah?
Rafah, located at the southernmost part of the Gaza Strip, shares a border with Egypt. On May 26th, following a rocket attack by Hamas on Tel Aviv, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) conducted an airstrike in Rafah.
This strike reportedly killed around 45 people and injured 200, primarily affecting displaced Palestinians. The IDF claimed the target was a terrorist shelter, and the civilian casualties were due to secondary explosions from Hamas’ stored explosives in civilian areas.

The Complexity of the Rafah Incident
The situation in Rafah is intricate, with both sides presenting different narratives. Israel maintains that their precision strike aimed to neutralize Hamas operatives, and the civilian casualties resulted from Hamas storing munitions in residential areas.
In contrast, Palestinian sources and international organizations like the UN and WHO condemned the strike for its impact on civilians. This disparity in accounts underscores the importance of understanding all perspectives in such conflicts.

The widespread sharing of the ‘All Eyes on Rafah’ image by Bollywood celebrities has highlighted a troubling trend of selective activism. Critics argue that these celebrities often engage in international issues without thoroughly understanding the context, leading to a skewed narrative.
The coordinated nature of their posts suggests a possible orchestrated campaign, raising questions about the authenticity of their activism.
Hypocrisy in Activism
The selective outrage demonstrated by these celebrities has drawn criticism, particularly for their silence on issues closer to home. Despite their vocal stance on the Rafah incident, many of these influencers have not addressed the persecution of Hindus in neighboring nations like Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh. This inconsistency highlights a selective moral compass and raises questions about their commitment to human rights.
The situation in Rafah and the broader Israel-Palestine conflict are deeply complex, with both sides suffering significant losses. On October 7, 2023, a terrorist attack by Hamas on Israel resulted in over 1,300 deaths and numerous abductions.
Israel’s subsequent military actions aimed to dismantle Hamas, further complicating the humanitarian situation in Gaza. The international community, advocates for a two-state solution and an end to terrorism and civilian casualties.
The targeted strike in Rafah, 1.7 km from the humanitarian area, used precise munitions carrying 34kg of explosives to eliminate 2 senior Hamas terrorists.

The Importance of Balanced Narratives
The ‘All Eyes on Rafah’ campaign and the reactions it garnered underscore the need for a balanced understanding of conflicts. Celebrities and influencers, with their vast reach, have a responsibility to present informed and nuanced views rather than engaging in selective outrage. Recognizing all sides of a story is crucial for fostering informed discourse and working towards genuine solutions.
The recent social media campaign about Rafah has exposed the selective outrage and potential superficiality of certain Bollywood celebrities.
While raising awareness about international conflicts is important, it is equally vital to approach such issues with a well-rounded understanding and consistency in advocating for justice, both globally and domestically.
