Several parts of northern India and central India are reeling under an intense heatwave, with Delhi’s Mungeshpur lodging daytime temperature of over 50 degrees Celcius, the hottest day in the capital city in 80 years, and the second-highest ever record since 1901
Though some parts of Delhi-NRC witnessed respite from heat after a little drizzling on Wednesday evening, the IMD has still sounded an orange alert for Thursday. It has been forecasted that the temperatures might decrease by 2°C to 3°C
The head of the Regional Weather Forecasting Centre at IMD, Kuldeep Srivastava stated that owing to western disturbances, there is a possibility of thunderstorms and lightning in Delhi-NCR and the entire Northwest region on 31st May and June 1st. Meanwhile, in Bihar, over 50 cases of students fainting and falling sick were reported due to the extreme heatwave, pushing the Nitish Kumar government to announce the closing of schools till June 8
After the ‘unbearable’ temperature at the border crossing 55 degrees Celsius, a BSF officer deployed on the India-Pakistan border lost his life due to a heat stroke
The eastern state is reeling under extreme heat, with 17 places in Bihar crossing 42 degrees Celcius mark. The government shut the schools in the state for summer vacations from April 15 to May 15, reopening on May 16
Amidst this, the northeastern region has been battered due to Cyclone Remal, the first major tropical cyclone of the year, killing around 30 across the Northeast
Roads were washed away, power supply was disrupted, trees and electrical poles were uprooted, and landslides were reported in different parts of the Northeast amid incessant rainfall conditions
Meanwhile, due to the collapsing of a stone quarry in Mizoram’s Aizwal amid incessant rain, at least 17 people, including two minors, were killed and at least seven others remain missing
In a separate incident in Assam, three persons, including a woman, were killed and 17 others were injured as heavy rains, accompanied by strong winds, lashed the state in the aftermath of cyclone Remal
In light of the rains, the governments of Mizoram and Meghalaya have ordered the closure of schools, while in Assam, a Red Alert has been issued along with the closure of all educational institutions till May 29
IMD stated that with Remal weakening into a deep depression, heavy rainfall was likely over parts of West Bengal and northeastern states
