The India Meteorological Department has predicted that heatwave conditions will prevail across ten states on May 31 with a yellow alert already in place for Bihar, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, West Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Odisha.
The Met department said that heatwave to severe heatwave conditions is expected in pockets of Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, in isolated pockets of Jharkhand and Odisha.
The weather bureau forecasted that heatwave conditions will weaken gradually weaken over Central and Northwest India from May 31 onwards.
The weather department noted, ‘Hot and humid weather very likely to prevail over isolated pockets of Konkan & Goa during 30th May – 1st June; Gangetic West Bengal on 30th & 31st May 2024.
The IMD latest report shows that the southwest monsoon has touched Kerala, and advanced to several northeastern states including Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Meghalaya and Assam.
Kerala is likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall till June 4. Heavy rainfall is also likely over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands from May 31 to June 2 and over Tamil Nadu and Karnataka from June 1 to June 3.
The IMD noted, ‘Strong surface winds (speed reaching 30-40 kmph) likely over Costal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Rayalaseema and Karnataka during 31st May- 03rd June’
