Over 22 people were killed and over 71 were injured after a bus rolled down in a gorge in the Tanda Morh on the Jammu-Poonch Highway in the Akhnoor area.
The site’s senior officials said the bus was coming from Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras. Deputy Commissioner Jammu said, ‘A bus carrying passengers from Hathras, Uttar Pradesh has met with an accident near Tanda, Akhnoor in Jammu’.
The exact cause of the accident is yet to be determined, while the authorities are investigating the matter. However, the driver has been detained by the Jammu Police.
Following the accident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the lives lost and announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the next kin of each deceased due to the bus mishap. The injured would be given Rs 50,000.
‘Anguished by the loss of lives due to a bus mishap in Akhnoor. My thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured recover soon’, PM’s post read on X.
It read further, ‘Rs 2 lakh would be given to the next of kin of each deceased due to the bus mishap. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000:PM’.
This comes after a bus carrying dozens met with a tragic accident in Jammu & Kashmir. In the accident over 20 were killed while 60 remained injured’.
This incident underscores the importance of road safety measures and the need for vigilance while travelling especially through hilly terrains.
