A massive fire broke out at the Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial Medical College in Meerut on Friday. No patients were in the hospital when the fire erupted, so no one was injured.
However, as the fire broke out, panic spread across the premises and people started fleeing the medical college.
The principal of the medical college, R.C. Gupta, stated that above the gynaecological operation theatre, there is an ENT operation theatre, while below it is the general operation theatre.
He mentioned that usually, doctors and patients start arriving there only after 9 am. It is after this time that operations and other work take place.
Thus, when the fire broke out, no doctors were present. Upon receiving information about the fire, the fire brigade team immediately reached the spot and managed to douse the fire about an hour.
Principal R.C. Gupta said that they have not yet been able to assess the damage. Meerut Chief Fire Officer Santosh Kumar said, ‘The incident took place this morning. Six fire tenders and personnel rushed to the spot and the fire was completely doused. No casualties have been reported’.
The fire is suspected to have been caused by a short circuit. Further investigations are underway.
