As per reports, the extremist carried out the attack ahead of a political event against growing Islamism in Europe by an organisation named Citizens’ Movement Pax Europa (BPE).
Among the injured is Michael Stürzenberger, a prominent political activist and a vocal critic of Islam, who was participating in a rally organized by the Citizens’ Movement Pax Europa. The rally, which took place around 11:45 a.m. local time, was disrupted when the assailant attacked Stürzenberger, stabbing him in the face and leg. Stefanie Kizina, a colleague, reported to Bild newspaper that Stürzenberger was undergoing emergency surgery, though his injuries are not life-threatening.
“The attacker used a knife to injure several people,” Mannheim police stated. “A firearm was then used against the attacker, who was also injured.”
Emergency services, including a medivac helicopter, quickly responded to the scene. The severity of the injuries sustained by the victims has yet to be disclosed, and further details are awaited.
