This Day in The History | Formation of Telangana: India’s 29th State | Italy’s Republic Day
Telangana became the 29th state of India on June 2, 2014. Initially merged with Andhra Pradesh on November 1, 1956, based on linguistic lines as recommended by the State Reorganization Commission, the people of Telangana soon felt left behind socially, economically, and educationally. This led to a persistent demand for a separate state. On November 29, 2009, K. Chandrashekhar Rao, leading the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), began an indefinite hunger strike to press for Telangana's statehood. The central government, under pressure, formed a five-member committee led by former judge Srikrishna on February 3, 2010, which submitted its report on December 30, 2010. Amid growing opposition and electoral pressure, the UPA government approved the formation of Telangana on October 3, 2013. On June 2, 2014, Telangana was officially declared a separate state, with Chandrashekhar Rao becoming its first Chief Minister. The state's capital is Hyderabad, and as of now, the current Chief Minister is Revanth Reddy.
