On Monday, the Supreme Court issued a directive prohibiting Macherla MLA Pinnelli Ramakrishna Reddy from entering the vote counting station on June 4. Reddy, a member of the YSR Congress Party, faces accusations of damaging an Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) at a polling station.
During the hearing, Reddy assured the vacation bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and Sandeep Mehta that he would comply with the order and refrain from entering the counting station. The allegations against Reddy stem from a web camera recording that purportedly captured him vandalizing an EVM at a polling center in the Macharla constituency of Palnadu district.
The Supreme Court, after reviewing the footage, criticized the interim protection previously granted to Reddy, calling it a “sheer mockery of the justice system.” The justices questioned the necessity of granting interim bail and described the decision as highly erroneous.
The Supreme Court was hearing an appeal challenging the Andhra Pradesh High Court’s decision to grant Reddy interim relief. The top court has now instructed the High Court to resolve the pending petition, scheduled for June 6, based on its own merits and without being influenced by previous observations.
