As the country eagerly awaits the results of the 18th Lok Sabha elections, early trends from Rajasthan indicate a lead for the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP). According to the Election Commission of India, BJP is currently leading with 13 seats in the state. In close competition, the Indian National Congress is trailing with nine seats.
In addition, smaller parties like the Communist Party of India (Marxist) – CPI(M), Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLTP), and Bharat Adivasi Party are leading in one seat each.
For the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, BJP contested all 25 seats in Rajasthan under the NDA alliance. The Congress, along with its allies, contested from 22 seats, while smaller parties like Bharat Adivasi Party, CPI(M), and Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP) contested from one seat each.
This year’s elections witnessed a massive turnout, with around 642 million people exercising their right to vote across seven phases held over a span of six weeks. The counting of votes commenced with postal ballots under tight security measures.
The counting process also includes results for State Legislative Assemblies, covering 175 Assembly constituencies in Andhra Pradesh and 147 in Odisha, along with bypolls in 25 Assembly constituencies.
Strict security arrangements have been put in place to ensure the smooth conduct of counting, involving over 8,000 candidates contesting in this general election. As the counting progresses, the electoral fate of numerous leaders from various political parties hangs in the balance.
Exit polls conducted prior to the elections hinted at a favorable outcome for the BJP, with projections indicating an improvement in their numbers compared to the 2019 polls. Most exit polls favored a continuation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tenure, with some even forecasting a two-thirds majority for the ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
However, the Congress party and its allies have dismissed the exit poll results as “orchestrated” and a product of “fantasy.” They remain steadfast in their belief that the opposition INDIA bloc will form the next government at the Centre.
