Tejasvi Surya, the chief of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) youth wing and Member of Parliament (MP), is leading by 2,65,649 votes in Karnataka’s Bangalore South constituency as of 4:16 pm, according to the Election Commission of India.
Surya’s main opponent is Congress party’s Sowmya Reddy, who narrowly lost the Karnataka State Assembly elections last year by just 16 votes. Despite her spirited challenge, early results show Surya maintaining a significant lead.
The Bangalore South constituency has been a BJP stronghold since 1991. The seat was held by senior BJP leader Ananth Kumar for over 22 years until his death in November 2018. Tejasvi Surya is aiming for a second term from this constituency.
Surya’s Political Journey
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, which marked Tejasvi Surya’s debut, he received a vote share of 62.2%, defeating Congress party’s BK Hariprasad, who managed to get 34.33% of the votes.
Surya, a graduate from the Bangalore Institute of Legal Studies, started his political career with the student wing of the BJP, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Since September 2020, he has been serving as the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM).

On March 20 this year, a case was registered against Surya at Halasuru Gate police station in Bengaluru based on a complaint by the Election Commission. The complaint was about alleged hate posts on social media.
Congress Party’s Campaign
The Congress party’s campaign in Bangalore South focused on four main guarantees: ‘Gruha Lakshmi’, ‘Gruha Jyoti’, ‘Yuva Nidhi’, and ‘Anna Bhagyave’. Despite their efforts, early results show a strong lead for Surya.
Created in 1977, the Bangalore South constituency includes eight assembly segments: Govindraj Nagar, Vijay Nagar, Chickpet, Basavanagudi, Padmanaba Nagar, BTM Layout, Jayanagar, and Bommanahalli. The constituency went to polls on April 26, recording a voter turnout of 53.15%.
Nationwide Lok Sabha Elections
The Lok Sabha elections for 543 seats were held in seven phases, starting from April 19 and ending on June 1. The Bharatiya Janata Party is seeking a rare third term at the Centre with Narendra Modi as Prime Minister.
Tejasvi Surya’s lead in Bangalore South indicates strong support for the BJP in this key constituency. As results continue to come in, Surya’s performance highlights the party’s continued dominance in the region.
