Prime Minister designate Narendra Modi, after being unanimously elected as the leader of the NDA Parliamentary Party, met President Droupadi Murmu on Friday to stake claim to form the government. Leading a coalition where the BJP, for the first time under his leadership, lacks a majority, Modi will be sworn in for his third consecutive term at a ceremony in Rashtrapati Bhavan at 7:15 pm on Sunday.
“We need a majority to form the government, but there should be consensus to run the country,” Modi stated, emphasizing the importance of unity in governance. He described the NDA as an “organic alliance” nurtured by trust over three decades and committed to ensuring unanimity in the next government’s decisions.
Addressing the NDA meeting, Modi assured the nation, “The majority they gave us to run the government, it will be our effort that we will strive towards consensus and leave no stone unturned towards taking the country forward.”
After his meeting with the President, Modi told reporters, “NDA members have chosen me once again. I have told her that the evening of June 9 will be good for the swearing-in. By that time, I will send the list of ministers to her.” He highlighted the continuity of his leadership, from NDA I to NDA III, and expressed confidence in taking the work forward with greater energy and vision.
The Rashtrapati Bhavan, in a communique, confirmed Modi’s appointment as Prime Minister, noting that the BJP-led NDA commands majority support in the newly constituted 18th Lok Sabha.
At the NDA meeting in the Central Hall of the old Parliament building, Modi, presenting himself as a coalition leader, stressed the need for unity for a developed India. Key allies, including TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, endorsed Modi’s leadership.
Naidu praised Modi, calling him a “great asset to the nation,” while Kumar expressed confidence in completing the coalition’s objectives. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde emphasized the strong ideological ties between the BJP and Shiv Sena, likening their alliance to an unbreakable “Fevicol bond.”
The meeting concluded with MPs unanimously endorsing a resolution moved by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to elect Modi as the leader of the BJP Parliamentary Party, NDA Parliamentary Party, and Lok Sabha.
