Amit Khare, a retired IAS officer from the 1985 batch of the Jharkhand cadre, has had a distinguished career in public service. He played a significant role in the formulation of the National Education Policy, which aimed to overhaul and improve the educational framework in Bharat.
Khare also served as the Secretary of Higher Education until his retirement on September 30, 2021. In addition to his work in education, he made notable contributions to the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, particularly in the area of digital media regulations, where he implemented key changes to better manage and regulate digital content.

Tarun Kapoor’s Background and Contributions
Tarun Kapoor, a retired IAS officer from the 1987 batch of the Himachal Pradesh cadre, has extensive experience in economic matters. Before his retirement on November 30, 2021, Kapoor served as the Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. His tenure was marked by efforts to manage and develop Bharat’s energy resources efficiently. Kapoor’s expertise in economic and energy issues makes him a valuable addition to the Prime Minister’s advisory team.
The re-appointment of Khare and Kapoor as advisors to the Prime Minister is for a period of two years, starting from June 10, 2024. They will hold the rank and scale of Secretary to the Government of India. Their roles will be on a contract basis, and the usual terms and conditions applicable to such appointments will apply.

The official notification from the government stated: “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of the following officers as Advisors to PM, in the Prime Minister’s Office, in the rank and scale of Secretary to Government of India, for a period of two years with effect from 10.06.2024 or until further orders whichever is earlier, on contract basis as per usual terms and conditions as are applicable.”
