Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has asked the leaders of the G7 countries to support a new “Marshall Plan” to help rebuild Ukraine. This plan is needed to repair the massive damage caused by Russia’s invasion. Zelenskyy made this request during a speech to the G7 leaders, and the details were shared on the presidential website.
The original Marshall Plan was a large-scale economic aid program from the United States that helped rebuild European countries after World War II. It provided billions of dollars and is credited with revitalizing the economies of those war-torn nations.
According to the World Bank, rebuilding Ukraine could cost nearly $500 billion. The war with Russia, which began almost 28 months ago, continues with no end in sight. Despite some recent territorial gains by Russia, Ukraine is still fighting to reclaim its lands and rebuild its cities.

Zelenskyy mentioned that lifting restrictions on using Western weapons against targets inside Russia has given Ukraine better protection, especially from air strikes in cities like Kharkiv. However, he stressed that Ukraine needs more air defense systems, like the Patriot missiles, and further steps to improve their long-range strike capabilities.
In his plea to the G7 leaders, Zelenskyy emphasized the urgency and scale of Ukraine’s reconstruction needs. He compared the situation to Europe after World War II, highlighting the necessity of a clear and comprehensive recovery plan to restore Ukraine’s economy and infrastructure.
