An incident occurred on Monday when the Kanchanjungha Express collided with a goods train in the Phansidewa area of Darjeeling district. The collision resulted in the loss of eight lives and left more than 25 people injured. The express train, which runs between Silchar in Assam and Sealdah in Kolkata, was arriving at its destination when the accident took place, causing widespread concern and fear among passengers.
“I was in S7 when this accident took place. We are very afraid after this accident. My parents are also worried,” shared a passenger who experienced the terrifying incident firsthand.
Responding to the accident, railway officials swiftly mobilized emergency services at Sealdah station in Kolkata. A team of doctors, ambulances, and emergency beds were arranged to provide immediate medical attention to the injured passengers. Eastern Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Kaushik Mitra, indicated that more than 10 beds were made available, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
“We have arranged a doctor’s team and RPF personnel on site. Ambulances are on standby, ready to assist as needed. Medical booths are also operational to guide passengers,” stated Deepak Nigam, Divisional Railway Manager of Sealdah.
As investigations into the cause of the accident continue, there are calls for accountability and improved safety measures within Bharat’s railway network. The incident has sparked renewed discussions on railway safety protocols and the adequacy of government oversight in ensuring passenger security.
