The United States and Bharat, two of the world’s oldest and largest democracies, share a special bond. This relationship is set to grow even stronger with the visit of Jake Sullivan, the US National Security Advisor, to New Delhi. Sullivan’s trip, which took place from June 17 to 18, marks the first visit to Bharat by a senior official from the Biden administration after the Modi government secured a third term.
During his visit, Sullivan met with Bharatiya Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya counterpart, Ajit Doval. The White House emphasized the importance of this visit in further deepening the US-India partnership, particularly in creating a safer and more prosperous Indo-Pacific region. John Kirby, the White House National Security Communications Advisor, highlighted this point in a press briefing on Monday.
A key focus of Sullivan’s visit was to co-chair the US-Bharat Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology, also known as iCET. This initiative aims to expand strategic cooperation in important technology sectors. These sectors include space, semiconductors, advanced telecommunications, artificial intelligence, quantum technology, biotechnology, and clean energy.
This partnership is seen as a landmark effort to enhance collaboration between the two countries in cutting-edge technologies.
However, during the press briefing, Kirby did not address questions regarding Nikhil Gupta, an Indian national accused of being involved in a murder-for-hire plot against Khalistani separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun on American soil. Gupta was recently extradited to the US from the Czech Republic and appeared in a federal court in New York, where he pleaded not guilty.
