A train accident near Jalpaiguri station in North Bengal has resulted in the loss of 10 lives and injuries to 25 others aboard the Sealdah-bound Kanchanjungha Express. The incident occurred in the Phansidewa area of Darjeeling district early Monday morning.
Sushanta Chowdhury, Tripura’s Transport Minister, confirmed that among those injured, two individuals were from Tripura. Fortunately, they are now stable, and there were no fatalities among passengers from Tripura.
Speaking from the civil secretariat in Agartala, Minister Sushanta Chowdhury reassured that efforts for restoration are underway swiftly. He has been in contact with the office of the Railway Minister, and Tripura’s Chief Minister, Manik Saha, has also engaged with the Union Railway Minister regarding the incident. The Kanchanjunga Express resumed its services from Sabroom, Tripura’s southernmost railway station, underscoring the region’s connectivity and hopes for expanded railway services.
In a separate announcement, Minister Chowdhury disclosed Tripura’s plans to fill 469 vacancies across various departments. These include critical positions in healthcare, with 16 super specialist doctors, 172 specialized medical officers, and 226 general degree medical officers set to be appointed. In addition, there are plans to recruit six food officers and 49 fire service officers to bolster essential services in the state.
Reflecting on the development of railway services, Minister Chowdhury expressed optimism about extending express services from smaller towns like Agartala in the future. He highlighted the significance of enhancing infrastructure and connectivity to promote regional development and ease of transportation for residents.
The state government’s proactive measures in recruitment and infrastructure development aim to strengthen Tripura’s public services while addressing critical needs in healthcare, food distribution, and emergency response. As recovery efforts continue, authorities remain committed to enhancing safety and service delivery across the state.
