Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the new campus of Nalanda University located in Rajgir, Bihar, this Wednesday, as per the sources familiar with the matter. The event is expected to be attended by ambassadors from 17 nations and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.
The university, rooted in historical significance, was established under the Nalanda University Act of 2010. This act stemmed from a decision made during the second East Asia Summit in 2007, held in the Philippines, aiming to revive the ancient seat of learning.
Originally founded in the fifth century, Nalanda University thrived for 800 years, attracting students from across the globe before its unfortunate destruction in the 12th century by invaders.
The new campus of Nalanda University is situated near the ancient ruins of its predecessor. Operational since 2014 from a temporary location with just 14 students, construction of the new campus commenced in 2017 to provide a permanent and modern infrastructure for its diverse student body.
In addition to Bharat, the university boasts participation from 17 other countries including Australia, Singapore, China, and several others. These nations have signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to support the university’s mission.
Nalanda University currently offers a total of 137 scholarships to international students across various academic programs. The university has six distinct schools, covering fields such as Buddhist Studies, Historical Studies, Ecology, and Sustainable Development.
