President Emmanuel Macron of France has made a surprising decision to dissolve the National Assembly and call for snap elections. This move comes after his centrist alliance faced a significant defeat in recent EU elections.
Macron defended his decision, calling it the most responsible course of action following the electoral setback. He emphasized that without this dissolution, the country would face chaos, citing the need to avoid political extremes and restore stability.
The upcoming elections, scheduled for June 30 and July 7, have sparked a reorganization of French politics, with new alliances forming across the spectrum. Macron’s ruling centrists currently lag behind both a new left-wing alliance and their main rival, which seeks a clear majority to govern effectively.
In polls conducted by IFOP for LCI television, Macron’s centrist bloc is projected to secure only 18% of the vote, while the leading opposition party is expected to garner 33%. Despite this lead, winning an absolute majority in the 577-seat National Assembly appears challenging for the opposition.
Jordan Bardella, a prominent figure in the opposition, has voiced his stance against assuming the role of prime minister without a clear majority. He has called for voters to provide his alliance with the mandate needed to govern decisively, asserting that such a majority is crucial for effective leadership.
The prospect of a government led by opposition figures has raised concerns across France, especially with the presidential elections looming in 2027. Marine Le Pen, a key figurehead of the opposition, sees this moment as a pivotal opportunity for her party to ascend to power, a scenario that has stirred widespread debate and apprehension.
