Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked a significant moment in India’s educational history as he inaugurated the new campus of Nalanda University in Rajgir, Bihar. The inauguration ceremony, held on June 19th, saw the Prime Minister unveiling a plaque and planting a sapling at the newly constructed campus.
The event was graced by several dignitaries including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Bihar Governor Rajendra Arlekar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy CMs Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Sinha, and various other delegates. Ambassadors from 17 countries were also in attendance, highlighting the international importance of the occasion.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi visited the ancient ruins of Nalanda, a UNESCO world heritage site located in Rajgir. The ruins of Nalanda are famed for their archaeological remains, consisting of stupas, shrines, viharas (residential and educational buildings), and intricate artworks in stucco, stone, and metal.
Elaborate security arrangements were put in place for the Prime Minister’s visit to the historical site. During his visit, he received a briefing about the ancient ruins from Gautami Bhattacharya, Superintending Archaeologist of the ASI Patna Circle.
Ahead of his visit to Nalanda, Prime Minister Modi expressed his excitement about the occasion in a social media post, saying, “It’s a very special day for our education sector. The new campus of the Nalanda University would be inaugurated at Rajgir. Nalanda has a strong connect with our glorious past. This university will surely go a long way in catering to the educational needs of the youth.”
Nalanda University holds immense historical significance as an ancient center of learning in India. Reviving this prestigious institution in its new avatar is seen as a crucial step towards enhancing educational opportunities and promoting academic excellence in the region.
