Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a significant move, inaugurated the new campus of Nalanda University on Wednesday. This event marks a momentous occasion in Bharat’s educational landscape, underscoring the revival of an ancient seat of learning that once epitomized knowledge and wisdom in Asia.
Addressing a gathering at the inauguration ceremony, PM Modi emphasized the historical and cultural significance of Nalanda, stating that it embodies India’s identity and values. He highlighted the resilience of knowledge against adversities, noting, “Fire can burn books, but it can’t destroy knowledge.”

The Prime Minister also extended the university’s legacy beyond India, acknowledging its role as a symbol of global learning and collaboration. He mentioned the participation of numerous countries in the reconstruction efforts of the university, reinforcing the spirit of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” where students from over 20 countries currently pursue education.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi visited the ancient ruins of Nalanda University, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2016. The newly inaugurated campus is equipped with modern facilities, including academic blocks, auditoriums, a student hostel, an international center, and a sports complex, among others.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Bihar Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and Nalanda University Chancellor Arvind Panagariya were present at the ceremony. The event also saw the participation of foreign envoys from 17 countries, highlighting Nalanda’s significance as a bridge of learning across nations.
In his remarks, Minister Jaishankar expressed optimism about Nalanda’s role in fostering global relationships through education. He emphasized that the university’s revival represents a crucial step in promoting international cooperation and understanding.
