PM Modi Celebrates International Yoga Day in Srinagar
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to Jammu and Kashmir, led the 10th International Day of Yoga celebrations at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) on the scenic banks of Dal Lake. Despite heavy rainfall that caused a delay in the event’s start, Modi emphasized the importance of incorporating yoga into daily life. The main event, initially set for 6:30 am, began later than planned due to the inclement weather, with officials noting moderate to heavy rainfall across the Valley, complicating outdoor activities.
In his speech, Modi highlighted yoga’s growing global appeal, noting that many world leaders and individuals are increasingly curious about and drawn to yoga. “The number of people doing yoga is continuously increasing in the world. Their attraction towards yoga is also on the rise,” he stated. He added that yoga fosters strength, good health, and wellness and praised the significant international interest in learning authentic yoga in India.
This year’s International Yoga Day, marking its tenth anniversary, carried the United Nations’ theme “Yoga for Self and Society.”

Modi’s address aligned with this theme, encouraging people worldwide to embrace yoga for its physical and mental benefits. He expressed joy in joining the program in Srinagar, reinforcing the communal and individual advantages of yoga practice.
PM Modi’s Visit to Jammu and Kashmir
Modi’s visit to Jammu and Kashmir holds additional significance as it is his first trip to the union territory since his third term as Prime Minister began.
During an event titled “Empowering Youth, Transforming J&K,” he assured the people that the region would soon regain its statehood. He highlighted the progress and changes in the area as a reflection of the BJP’s decade-long work at the Centre.
The timing of Modi’s visit is crucial, given the upcoming assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. The region has not had an assembly since 2018, following the collapse of the coalition government led by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the imposition of Governor’s Rule.
Modi’s visit and assurances about statehood are seen as significant in the political landscape, aiming to garner support and emphasize the government’s commitment to the region’s development.
During the event, Modi shared several key messages about yoga:
– “People from across the world come to India because they want to learn authentic yoga.”
– “The number of people practicing yoga is growing worldwide.”
– “Yoga fosters strength, good health, and wellness. Wonderful to join this year’s program in Srinagar.”
International Yoga Day 2024 in Srinagar, led by Prime Minister Modi, was marked by both celebrations and challenges due to the weather. Modi’s visit to Jammu and Kashmir highlighted yoga’s global significance and underscored the political importance of his trip, particularly in light of the upcoming assembly elections and the promise of statehood restoration.
