A new law called the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024, started on Friday. This law aims to stop cheating in public exams and common entrance tests across India. It comes after many issues were reported with the NEET and UGC NET exams.
The law was officially announced by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions. The announcement said that the law would begin on June 21, 2024. This Act was passed by both houses of Parliament in the Budget session that ended on February 10, and President Droupadi Murmu approved it on February 13. The public exams mentioned in the law include those conducted by various government bodies such as the Union Public Service Commission, Staff Selection Commission, Railway Recruitment Board, National Testing Agency, Institute of Banking Personnel Selection, and other central government departments.
The Act also makes it illegal to reveal confidential exam information before the official time and bans unauthorized people from entering exam centers to cause disruptions. If someone breaks this law, they can face three to five years in prison and a fine of up to Rs 10 lakh. All offenses under this law are serious, and those accused cannot get bail or settle the case out of court.
Recently, the NEET-UG 2024 exam was held on May 5, and the results were announced on June 4, earlier than the planned date of June 14. The NEET-UG exam, organized by the National Testing Agency (NTA), is crucial for students seeking admission to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other related courses in India.
