In the early hours of Tuesday, a bomb threat was reported for Air India flight AI-149, scheduled from Cochin to London Gatwick. The threat, received by Air India’s Mumbai call center, raised immediate concern at Cochin International Airport.
Officials swiftly notified Air India Cochin and Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) at 01:22 hours. Following safety protocols, a Bomb Threat Assessment Committee (BTAC) convened to assess the threat’s credibility. It was deemed specific and required thorough security measures.
Airport Security Group (ASG-CISF) personnel, along with airline security, conducted extensive checks using inline baggage screening systems. Their priority was to locate the caller who made the threat to Mumbai’s call centre.
Investigations revealed that Suhaib, a 29-year-old from Kondotty Malappuram scheduled to travel on AI-149 with his family, had placed the call. ASG intercepted Suhaib during the check-in process at the international departure terminal. He was subsequently handed over to the police for further inquiry.
Based on BTAC recommendations, the aircraft was moved to an isolated area for a comprehensive security sweep. After a meticulous inspection, the plane was cleared for flight. By 10:30 am, check-in for the 215 passengers was completed, with boarding set to commence shortly for an 11:50 am departure.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident to ensure the safety and security of all passengers and personnel involved in this alarming episode at Cochin International Airport.
