Early this morning, tragedy struck at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport as a section of Terminal 1’s roof collapsed amid heavy rainfall. The incident resulted in the death of one individual and left eight others injured. The collapse occurred at the old Departure forecourt, damaging vehicles parked in the pick-up and drop-off area.
In response to the incident, all departures from Terminal 1 have been temporarily halted, and check-in counters closed as a precautionary measure. IndiGo and SpiceJet have canceled all departing flights until 2 pm. Emergency services swiftly responded to the scene, rescuing trapped individuals, including one man trapped under an iron beam in his car.

A spokesperson from the Delhi airport confirmed that the collapse was due to heavy rain, which had been ongoing since early morning. The injured have been transported to hospitals for medical treatment, with emergency personnel assisting on-site.

IndiGo, a major airline operating from Terminal 1, announced disruptions to its flight operations due to the structural damage. Passengers already inside the terminal were allowed to proceed with their flights, while those scheduled for later were offered alternative arrangements. The incident has also affected operations across IndiGo’s network, prompting advisories for passengers to check their flight statuses before heading to the airport.

Weather Conditions in Delhi
Delhi experienced heavy rainfall for the second consecutive day, providing relief from the intense summer heat but causing waterlogging in various parts of the city. The Safdarjung Observatory recorded 154 mm of rainfall, according to the India Meteorological Department. The rain, although beneficial for cooling temperatures, led to traffic disruptions and inundated roads in several areas.
