In June 2024, Indian Railways set a new record by loading 135.46 million tonnes (MT) of freight. This is a significant increase of 12.40 MT compared to the same month last year.
The Ministry of Railways announced that this 10.07% year-on-year growth highlights the railways’ improved efficiency and the rising demand for their freight services.
Financially, Indian Railways also saw substantial gains from their freight operations. In June 2024, they earned Rs 14,798.11 crore, which is Rs 1,481.29 crore more than the Rs 13,316.81 crore earned in June 2023. This 11.12% increase in revenue showcases the crucial role Indian Railways plays in India’s logistics sector and its contribution to the national economy.
The press release emphasized Indian Railways’ ability to handle a wide variety of freight categories efficiently, each playing a key role in the record-breaking performance. Coal shipments led the list with 60.27 MT, not including imported coal, underlining the railways’ important role in transporting fuel for different industries.
Imported coal shipments were also significant, totaling 8.82 MT, highlighting India’s dependence on global energy sources. Iron ore transport reached 15.07 MT, showing the railways’ support to the mining and steel industries. The movement of pig iron and finished steel hit 5.36 MT, indicating active participation in manufacturing and construction.
Cement shipments, excluding clinker, amounted to 7.56 MT, aiding infrastructure development across the country. In addition, 5.28 MT of clinker was transported, crucial for cement production. Foodgrain shipments totaled 4.21 MT, contributing to food security initiatives. Fertilizers amounted to 5.30 MT, supporting agricultural productivity.
Mineral oil shipments were at 4.18 MT, vital for various industrial and consumer uses. Containers handled by Indian Railways reached 6.97 MT, reflecting their role in efficient and cost-effective intermodal transportation.
Other goods, totaling 10.06 MT, included a diverse range of commodities, showcasing the railways’ comprehensive logistics capabilities.
Under the motto “Hungry For Cargo,” Indian Railways has continuously worked to improve business efficiency and offer competitive services. This customer-focused approach, along with the proactive efforts of their Business Development Units and flexible policy-making, has been key to achieving this notable success.
