Heavy rains continue to batter the northeastern states of Manipur and Assam, leading to severe flooding. The situation is critical, with dozens of lives lost and thousands forced into relief camps as floods damage homes and infrastructure.

Death Toll and Displacement

Authorities have confirmed that the total death toll from flood-related incidents in both states has reached 48 as of Wednesday. In Assam, more than 3.86 lakh people are now sheltering in 515 relief camps and distribution centers across 24 flood-affected districts. The relentless rains and rising floodwaters have left many without homes, forcing a massive evacuation effort.

Villages and Crops Underwater

A staggering 2,800 villages under 105 revenue circles remain submerged, with floodwaters inundating 39,451.51 hectares of crop area. The extensive flooding has severely impacted agriculture, with vast swathes of farmland underwater and crops destroyed.

In the past 24 hours alone, the floods have wreaked havoc on infrastructure, damaging hundreds of roads, dozens of bridges, and thousands of houses in both Manipur and Assam. The water levels of the Brahmaputra River and its tributaries have breached danger levels, causing widespread destruction in nearby areas.

In Manipur, the Imphal River breached its embankment at Singjamei Oinam Thingel in Imphal West, while the Kongba River swelled at Kongba Irong and parts of Keirao in Imphal East. These breaches have exacerbated the flooding, leading to more damage and displacement.

Relief operations are in full swing, with the Indian Army, state authorities, and the National and State Disaster Response Forces (NDRF and SDRF) working tirelessly to assist those affected. Other northeastern states, including Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh, are also sending manpower to support the relief efforts.

The central government has pledged its full support to the flood-hit states, offering additional manpower, boats, and life-saving materials to aid Assam and Manipur. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for all northeastern states this week, warning of continued heavy rainfall.

As the situation remains dire, authorities and relief teams are doing their best to provide assistance and ensure the safety of those affected by the devastating floods.
