The Amarnath Yatra, a pilgrimage to the sacred cave shrine, was temporarily halted on Saturday due to heavy rainfall along both the Baltal and Pahalgam routes. Officials made this decision as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of pilgrims.
Since last night, there have been intermittent heavy rains along the routes leading to the 3,800-metre-high cave shrine. This prompted authorities to suspend the yatra temporarily to avoid any risks to the devotees.
The pilgrimage, which began on June 29, attracts thousands of devotees annually. Pilgrims undertake the journey via two routes: the traditional 48-km Nunwan-Pahalgam route and the shorter but steeper 14-km Baltal route. The yatra is scheduled to conclude on August 19.

This year, more than 1.50 lakh devotees have already visited the cave shrine to have ‘darshan’ of the naturally formed ice lingam. Last year, the pilgrimage saw over 4.5 lakh pilgrims offering prayers at the sacred site.
Authorities continue to monitor the weather conditions closely and will decide on resuming the yatra based on safety assessments and weather updates.
