In a shocking development in the Worli hit-and-run case, Mihir Shah, the primary suspect, allegedly called his girlfriend 40 times after he reportedly rammed his BMW into a two-wheeler, killing one and injuring another. Shah is said to have contacted her before abandoning his car and heading to her residence. The police are now considering detaining and interrogating Shah’s girlfriend as part of their investigation.
On Wednesday, a court remanded the 24-year-old Shah in police custody until July 16. Shah was arrested on Tuesday, two days after a friend switched on his mobile phone, enabling the police to trace his location. He is accused of fatally hitting Kaveri Nakhwa, 45, and injuring her husband Pradeep in Mumbai’s Worli area on Sunday morning.
During the court hearing, police described the incident as a “cruel, heartless crime” and argued for maximum custody to investigate who helped Shah escape and to recover the car’s number plate. Shah was eventually apprehended in Virar, near Mumbai, after evading capture since Sunday.
In a significant breakthrough, Shah’s friend turned on his mobile phone for just 15 minutes, which was enough for the police to trace it to Virar. Following this, a team from Worli Police Station was dispatched, leading to Shah’s detention. Meanwhile, Shah’s mother and two sisters were brought in for questioning from Shahapur in Thane district, along with 10 other individuals.
According to police, Shah’s politician father, Rajesh Shah, played an active role in his son’s escape and had plans to tow away the BMW. Rajesh Shah, a Shiv Sena politician from Palghar district, was subsequently sacked from his position as deputy leader of the party but remains a member.
Driver Bidawat, who was allegedly with Mihir and swapped seats with him, is already in police custody until July 11.
