The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (Nato) has issued a strong statement of support for Ukraine, declaring its path to membership in the military alliance “irreversible” and warning Russia that its actions in Ukraine constitute the “most significant and direct threat” to the security of Nato member states.
In the Washington Declaration Summit, Nato members pledged to support Ukraine’s defence reforms, security, and Euro-Atlantic integration, while condemning Russia’s actions in Ukraine as “war crimes”. The declaration also announced a pledge of long-term assistance for Ukraine, worth at least €40 billion, and established a Nato-Ukraine joint analysis, training, and education centre to increase Ukraine’s interoperability with Nato.
The declaration emphasized Ukraine’s progress in implementing democratic, economic, and security reforms, and welcomed the country’s increasing interoperability with Nato. It also acknowledged Ukraine’s commitment to pursuing its Euro-Atlantic aspirations, including membership in Nato.
Nato’s support for Ukraine comes amid ongoing tensions between Ukraine and Russia, which has been accused of perpetrating “war crimes” in Ukraine. The alliance’s declaration is seen as a strong statement of support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and a warning to Russia against further aggression.
The declaration also highlighted Nato’s commitment to strengthening its collective defence and deterrence capabilities, including nuclear, conventional, and missile defence capabilities, complemented by space and cyber capabilities. The alliance also pledged to increase its defence spending and to strengthen its defence industry across Europe and North America.
Overall, the Washington Declaration Summit marked a significant milestone in Nato’s relationship with Ukraine, and sent a strong message to Russia about the alliance’s commitment to Ukrainian security and Euro-Atlantic integration.
