This Day in The History | Morarji Desai’s Resignation and Political Shift

Born on July 15, 1912, in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Brigadier Mohammad Usman Masoodi was a senior Indian Army officer who heroically sacrificed his life during the Indo-Pakistani War.

Brigadier Mohammad Usman Masoodi: The Lion of Nowshera*

Born on July 15, 1912, in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Brigadier Mohammad Usman Masoodi was a senior Indian Army officer who heroically sacrificed his life during the Indo-Pakistani War. Known as the ‘Lion of Nowshera,’ he was among the first batch of Indian military officers trained in Britain and earned acclaim for his leadership during World War II. As the commander of the 50 Para Brigade, he led a victorious defense of Nowshera. Brigadier Usman was killed in action on July 3, 1948, while fighting Pakistani intruders near Jhangar in Jammu and Kashmir. He was posthumously awarded the Mahavir Chakra for his bravery.

His “Kamaraj Plan” aimed to strengthen the Congress party by encouraging senior leaders to resign from government roles to focus on organizational work. Known for his integrity and simplicity, K. Kamaraj’s legacy continues to influence Indian politics.

After the Emergency-era elections, the Janata Party secured a significant victory with 345 seats, reducing Congress to 189 seats. Initially chosen as PM, Desai faced internal discord, with Charan Singh later withdrawing support and forming a new government. This marked a pivotal moment in India’s political landscape during the late 1970s.
