Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently stated that he is not concerned about the possibility of Donald Trump becoming the president of the United States again. Despite concerns that a Trump administration might be more sympathetic to Russia, Zelensky expressed confidence in future cooperation.
Ukraine is currently in its third year of fighting against Russian forces. The outcome of the upcoming US elections could impact the level of support Ukraine receives from Washington. Zelensky’s reassurance came during a press conference in Kyiv, where he emphasized his belief in continued collaboration with the US, even if Trump wins.
Donald Trump, a candidate for the Republican Party, has suggested that he would end the conflict in Ukraine very quickly if he were elected president. This has raised fears in Kyiv that Ukraine might have to negotiate with Moscow from a weaker position. However, Zelensky remains optimistic about the support from the Republican Party.
During a recent trip to the United States for a NATO defense alliance summit, Zelensky met with several Republican governors. He received assurances of the party’s backing for Ukraine. Zelensky highlighted that while there are some extreme views within the party, the majority support Ukraine and its people.
Zelensky pointed out that there are “hawks” within the Republican Party with more radical views. Despite this, he believes that the overall sentiment in the party is supportive of Ukraine. This reassurance comes as Trump claims he could settle the Ukraine conflict before taking office in January 2025 if elected.
President Zelensky is confident in Ukraine’s ability to work with a potential Trump administration. He believes in the strong bipartisan support for Ukraine in the US, which is crucial as the country continues to face challenges in its ongoing conflict with Russia.
