Former President Donald Trump’s legal battle over classified documents came to a surprising turn when US District Judge Aileen Cannon dismissed the case.
According to CNN, Judge Cannon ruled that the appointment of special counsel Jack Smith was unconstitutional. She argued that there was no statutory authority to appoint Smith to prosecute Trump for allegedly taking classified national defense documents after leaving office.
In her ruling, Judge Cannon highlighted concerns about the ad hoc nature of recent special counsel appointments, which she felt lacked sufficient judicial oversight. This decision marks a significant development in Trump’s legal defense against charges of willfully retaining national defense information.
Trump was indicted last year by a federal grand jury in Miami, accused of unlawfully taking classified documents from the White House and resisting government efforts to recover them. Both Trump and his aide, Walt Nauta, pleaded not guilty to the charges. The case took a new turn on July 27, 2023, when Smith added additional charges against Trump and Nauta, including counts related to obstruction conspiracy.
Reacting to the dismissal, Trump expressed satisfaction, calling for the dismissal of other cases against him, including those related to the January 6th events and allegations from various jurisdictions. He characterized all charges as politically motivated attacks orchestrated by his opponents.

Assassination Attempt at Campaign Rally
In a separate incident, Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. Gunshots rang out while he was on stage in Butler, prompting Secret Service agents to rush in. Trump sustained a minor injury to his ear from a bullet that grazed him, and one attendee was tragically killed while two others were critically injured. The assailant, Thomas Matthew Crooks, was swiftly neutralized by Secret Service agents.
The FBI is currently investigating the shooting incident, focusing on the motive and circumstances surrounding the attack. Trump, undeterred, continued with his rally after the incident, emphasizing the need to end the weaponization of justice and unify the nation in the face of political strife.
This series of events underscores the volatile intersection of legal challenges and security threats faced by public figures like Trump, as well as the broader implications for national security and political discourse in the United States.
