In a desperate attempt to prevent former PM Imran Khan’s PTI from becoming the single-largest party in the National Assembly in Pakistan, the Shehbaz Sharif government on Monday announced its decision to ban Khan’s party, slapping high treason charges on Imran Khan and former President Dr Arif Alvi. The decision that intensified the political chaos in the country was condemned by Pakistan’s human rights body, warning that the measure is an “enormous blow” to the nation’s democracy and might lead to violence. On the other hand, PTI urged the government against taking any steps that may “shake the foundations of Pakistan”.
