On Tuesday, the Delhi Police took a significant step in the case involving Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s aide, Bibhav Kumar. They filed a chargesheet against him related to the alleged assault on Aam Aadmi Party’s Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal.
This action coincided with the Tis Hazari Court extending Kumar’s judicial custody until July 30, directing the Jail Superintendent to ensure his physical presence at the next hearing.
Sources within the Delhi Police revealed that a comprehensive 1,000-page chargesheet has been compiled. It includes statements from security personnel stationed at Kejriwal’s residence who acted as witnesses.
In addition, the police seized several crucial pieces of evidence, including the DVR from the Chief Minister’s residence and two mobile phones belonging to Kumar. During his custody, Kumar was taken to Mumbai twice to recover allegedly deleted data from these devices.
The charges against Bibhav Kumar stem from an incident recounted in an FIR filed by Swati Maliwal. She accused Kumar of physically assaulting her, alleging that he slapped her multiple times and kicked her in the chest, stomach, and pelvis during her visit to Kejriwal’s residence on May 13.
In a recent development, the Delhi High Court denied bail to Bibhav Kumar on July 12. The court cited his influential position and expressed concerns that his release could potentially lead to witness intimidation or tampering with evidence. The judge stated that given the seriousness of the accusations and the apprehension of witness influence, there were insufficient grounds to grant bail at this stage.
The case continues to draw attention due to its political ramifications and the involvement of high-profile individuals. As legal proceedings unfold, further developments are awaited in this closely watched matter.
