The law ministry announced on Tuesday that any mention of the now-replaced Indian Penal Code (IPC), Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and Evidence Act in any statute, ordinance, or regulation will be considered a reference to the new criminal justice laws.
The IPC, CrPC, and Evidence Act were replaced by the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) on July 1. The legislative department in the law ministry issued a notification under the General Clauses Act to clarify this transition.
An official explained that the notification serves to reaffirm the facts under the General Clauses Act, which deals with laws that are repealed and re-enacted. The need for this clarification arose during various conferences and seminars on the three new laws, where it was evident that some people were unaware of these provisions.
The notification aims to bring clarity and reaffirm facts regarding the new criminal justice laws.
