Punjab Police have made a significant breakthrough in their fight against drug smuggling with the arrest of two individuals linked to a Pakistan-backed smuggling operation. The suspects, Gurmukh Singh and Jaswant Singh were apprehended with 7 kg of heroin and five pistols in their possession. Both men are residents of the Tarn Taran district in Punjab.
In a press release, Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab, Gaurav Yadav, highlighted the successful operation, which aligns with Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s vision of a safe and secure Punjab. The operation, carried out by Amritsar Rural police teams, resulted in the seizure of four 9MM Glock pistols, one .32 bore pistol, five live cartridges, and five magazines. Additionally, the police impounded the suspects’ Swift Dzire car.
The arrests were made following a tip-off about a weapon consignment being transported by the suspects in their Swift Dzire car. Police set up a special checkpoint near the village of Muhawa in the Gharinda area, where they intercepted the vehicle and detained the suspects. During questioning, Gurmukh Singh and Jaswant Singh revealed that they had concealed heroin near their homes. A subsequent raid led to the discovery of 7 kg of heroin.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the arrested individuals were in direct contact with Pakistan-based smugglers. They used drones to smuggle drugs and weapons into India and then distributed them across Punjab. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amritsar Rural, Satinder Singh, mentioned that efforts are underway to trace the broader network of smugglers and identify the Pakistani operatives involved.

The case has been registered under FIR no. 170 dated 16/7/2024 at Police Station Gharinda in Amritsar Rural. Charges include violations of the Arms Act and sections 21, 25, and 29 of the NDPS Act. This bust marks a major step in Punjab’s ongoing campaign against drug smuggling and illegal arms trade, reinforcing the state’s commitment to ensuring safety and security for its residents.
