The Indian government is closely monitoring the ongoing protests in Bangladesh, where there are around 8,500 Indian students and approximately 15,000 Indian nationals residing. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued a statement ensuring that the External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is personally overseeing the situation.

Randhir Jaiswal, the MEA spokesperson, provided updates during a weekly press briefing on Friday. He emphasized that the safety of Indian nationals is a top priority. “We are aware of the protests in Bangladesh. Our community there includes many students, particularly in the field of medical education. We assure that they are safe and in constant touch with the Indian High Commission,” he said.

The MEA has issued a travel advisory for Indian nationals in Bangladesh. They are advised to stay in close contact with the Indian High Commission for any assistance needed. The High Commission and Assistant High Commissions are available through helpline numbers to provide support. Families in India are urged to stay in touch with the High Commission for regular updates on the situation.

Protests in Bangladesh have intensified over a controversial quota system in government jobs, leading to several deaths and hundreds of injuries. In response, the Bangladeshi authorities have imposed restrictions on internet and mobile services and gatherings to manage the situation.

In response to the situation, security has been increased outside the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi. This is a precautionary measure to prevent any potential protests. Police personnel have been stationed outside the Commission’s office to ensure safety and order.

The Indian government remains committed to the safety and well-being of its nationals in Bangladesh. Regular updates will be provided by the High Commission, and family members are encouraged to stay informed and maintain contact. The MEA continues to monitor the situation closely and is prepared to offer all possible assistance.
