On July 21, 2024, the Indian Naval Ship (INS) Brahmaputra experienced a significant fire while it was undergoing maintenance. The blaze started in the evening and was eventually brought under control by the ship’s crew, with additional help from firefighters at Mumbai’s naval dockyard and other nearby naval vessels. Despite their efforts, the ship suffered severe damage and is now resting on its side in the water.
The fire was managed by the crew and external firefighters by the morning of July 22, but the ship developed a serious tilt towards its port side or left side. This tilt, known as “listing,” made it impossible for the ship to be returned to an upright position. The listing continued, causing the ship to rest further on its side alongside its berth.
The Indian Navy has stated that while all personnel aboard the ship have been accounted for, one junior sailor remains missing. Search operations are currently underway to locate this missing sailor.

An official inquiry has been launched to determine the cause of the fire and assess the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Navy is focused on both the ongoing search for the missing sailor and the investigation into the fire and damage to the ship.
