On Saturday, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban gave a speech at the Tusvanyos Summer University in Baile Tusnad, Romania, where he made several controversial statements about the European Union and international politics. Orban, known for his nationalist views, claimed that the EU is on a path to decline and warned of a shift towards a new “world order” centered in Asia.
Orban criticized the EU for allegedly abandoning its own interests and following a pro-Democrat foreign policy dictated by the United States. He argued that Europe is sacrificing its own stability by adhering to American policies, which he believes could lead to Europe’s destruction. According to Orban, countries like China, India, Pakistan, and Indonesia are becoming the new centers of global influence, marking a significant shift in world power dynamics.
In his speech, Orban also made serious allegations about the United States. He claimed that the US was responsible for the explosions that damaged the Nord Stream gas pipelines, which transport gas from Russia to Germany. Orban described these explosions as “an act of terrorism” but did not provide any evidence to support this claim.
The Prime Minister’s remarks come amid heightened criticism from other European leaders. Orban has recently attempted to mediate in the Russia-Ukraine conflict by visiting Moscow and Beijing, a move that has drawn criticism for his perceived closeness to Russia. He has expressed doubts about Ukraine’s potential membership in NATO or the EU, suggesting that Ukraine might remain a “buffer state” rather than joining these organizations. Orban has also been criticized for his reluctance to support Ukraine with military aid or sanctions against Russia.
Orban reiterated his stance against immigration, arguing that it is not a solution to Hungary’s declining population. He warned that if the number of immigrants surpasses the native population, it could threaten the identity of the country.

In addition to his remarks about the EU and international issues, Orban voiced strong support for former US President Donald Trump. He endorsed Trump’s bid for re-election and suggested that Trump’s opponents are trying to undermine him through legal and political attacks. Orban claimed that Trump’s re-election campaign is a bid to restore national sovereignty and criticized the legal challenges facing Trump, even alluding to an assassination attempt against him.
Orban’s speech is part of his broader effort to use the Tusványos festival to express his nationalist and anti-EU views. He has previously used the platform to promote his vision of an “illiberal state” in Hungary and to criticize the EU’s immigration policies. His statements have consistently sparked controversy and debate both within Hungary and across Europe.
As Hungary holds the rotating presidency of the EU, Orban’s comments and actions continue to draw attention and criticism from European and international observers. His nationalist stance and support for Trump highlight the ongoing tensions between Hungary’s government and other EU member states.
