The Border Security Force (BSF) has foiled an infiltration attempt along the Indo-Bangladesh Border (IBB) in West Bengal’s Nadia district, said the officials.
‘The incident took place on Saturday at around 2.40 a.m. under the jurisdiction of the Ranghat Border Outpost’, said A.K. Arya, DIG and spokesperson.
‘A jawan of the 68 Bn BSF spotted activity across the Kodalia river that forms a natural boundary between the two countries. About 8-10 Bangladeshis were entering India through a banana plantation. When the jawan challenged them and ordered them to retreat, they rushed forward in a bid to attack him with sharp-edged weapons’, said the DIG. He further added, ‘The jawan first hurled a stun grenade but this wasn’t enough to deter the group. He then fired two rounds at them. The intruders then fled back towards Bangladesh, taking advantage of the darkness and the dense foliage’.
Officials said, ‘As many as 23 Bangladeshi nationals and a tout were arrested from the Agartala railway station on Saturday night for illegally entering India’.
The Government Railway Police said the Bangladeshis had arrived in India in search of jobs and were arrested while trying to board a train to move to other states via Guwahati in Assam.
They are aged between 19 and 40 years and are residents of Chapainawabganj district in Bangladesh’s Rajshahi division.
A few days ago, two Indian touts were arrested from the railway station for their alleged involvement in helping Bangladeshi nationals infiltrate. They were charged under the Foreigners Act and the Passport Act.
A huge number of Bangladeshi and Rohingya people were similarly arrested at the Agartala railway station and other parts of Tripura in the last few weeks.
