On Saturday, the Finance Ministry called on public sector insurance companies, including Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), to quickly process and disburse insurance claims for victims of the recent landslides in Kerala. The disaster has caused significant damage, and the government is taking steps to ensure that affected families receive the financial support they need as swiftly as possible.
The insurance companies, including LIC, National Insurance Corporation, New India Assurance, Oriental Insurance, and United India Insurance, have been directed to expedite the processing of claims. They are actively reaching out to their policyholders through multiple channels such as local newspapers, social media, company websites, and SMS to provide the necessary contact information for assistance.
This outreach is focused on the districts most affected by the disaster, which include Wayanad, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, and Thrissur.
To facilitate this process, the Finance Ministry has relaxed the documentation requirements for processing claims. This change aims to make it easier and faster for victims to receive their payouts without unnecessary delays. Specifically, LIC has been instructed to prioritize and expedite claims under the PM Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana, a government insurance scheme designed to provide financial support to policyholders and their families.
In addition, the General Insurance Council will coordinate with all insurance companies to ensure that claims are processed and paid out promptly. A dedicated portal will be set up to track the status of claims and provide daily updates, ensuring transparency and efficiency in handling the claims process.
The central government and the Finance Ministry are committed to supporting the victims of this disaster. They are working to make sure that the necessary assistance is provided without any delays or complications, helping affected families recover as quickly as possible from this devastating event.
