On Wednesday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian made it clear that Iran will not remain silent in the face of aggression against its interests and security. In a phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron, Pezeshkian stressed Iran’s firm stance amid escalating regional tensions.
The tension has escalated following the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last week. President Pezeshkian emphasized to Macron that if the United States and Western countries genuinely want to prevent war, they must compel Israel to stop what he described as a “genocide” in Gaza and to agree to a ceasefire.
Call for Peace and Security
According to Iranian state media, President Pezeshkian reiterated that Iran values the avoidance of war and the pursuit of global peace and security as core principles. He urged Western nations to take action to ensure these goals are achieved.
In response to Haniyeh’s killing, an emergency meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) was held on Wednesday in Saudi Arabia at Iran’s request. This meeting aimed to address the circumstances surrounding the death of the former Hamas leader.
Accusations Against Israel
Tehran, along with Iran-aligned groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah, has accused Israel of being responsible for Haniyeh’s death on July 31. This incident is part of a series of killings of senior Hamas figures amidst ongoing conflict. However, Israeli officials have not claimed responsibility for the assassination.
The situation underscores the complex and volatile nature of Middle Eastern geopolitics. As tensions rise, the international community closely watches how these developments might impact broader regional stability and security. President Pezeshkian’s statements and the OIC’s actions highlight the urgency of addressing these conflicts through diplomatic and peaceful means.
