Haris Salve, India’s top advocate will be representing the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) for Vinesh Phogat at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). This comes after wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the Olympics 2024, hours before her final match for being 100 grams overweight.
Salve, who has formerly served as the Solicitor General of India and the King’s Counsel, has confirmed that he has been engaged by the IOA to represent Vinesh Phogat at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Salve’s expertise will be crucial in addressing the legal and procedural aspects of the dispute.
Vinesh Phogat, who was disqualified hours before playing the gold medal match, appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), to let her at least share the silver medal. Phogat’s appeal was accepted by the Court and the ad hoc hearing at CAS is scheduled to start at 9:00 AM Paris time (12:30 PM IST).
A day after being disqualified from the finals at the Paris Olympics 2024, Vinesh Phogat announced her retirement in an emotional post. She said, ‘Maa kushti (wrestling) won against me, I lost. Forgive me, your dream and my courage have been broken. I don’t have any more strength now. Goodbye Wrestling 2001-2024. I will always be indebted to you all for forgiveness’.
