In a recent session of the Rajya Sabha, a notable exchange between Vice President and Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar and Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan took center stage, highlighting the importance of maintaining decorum in the Upper House of Parliament. The incident occurred when Chairman Dhankhar referred to Jaya Bachchan as ‘Jaya Amitabh Bachchan,’ which led to a heated response from the veteran actress-turned-politician.
Jaya Bachchan’s Objection: A Misplaced Concern
Jaya Bachchan, visibly upset by the Chairman’s address, accused Dhankhar of using an “unacceptable tone” towards her. She claimed that, as an artist, she was particularly sensitive to body language and expressions, and found the tone used by Dhankhar disrespectful. This accusation sparked protests from the Opposition MPs, who quickly rallied behind Bachchan, leading to a walkout from the session.
However, it is important to note that the title “Jaya Amitabh Bachchan” is not an unusual or inappropriate reference, especially considering that Jaya Bachchan has been publicly known by this name for many years. Her sudden objection raises questions about the consistency of her stance and whether this was a genuine concern or a political maneuver. The fact that she herself has embraced her husband’s name in various public forums makes her objections seem somewhat contradictory.
Jagdeep Dhankhar’s Response: A Defense of Parliamentary Conduct
In response to the protests and Bachchan’s accusations, Chairman Dhankhar calmly but firmly reminded the Rajya Sabha of the importance of maintaining decorum, regardless of one’s status or background. He emphasized that the rules of parliamentary conduct apply equally to all members, whether they are celebrities or not.
“Jaya ji, you have earned a great reputation. You know an actor is subject to the director. But every day, I do not want to repeat myself. Every day, I don’t want to do schooling. You are talking about my tone? Enough of it. You may be anybody. You have to understand the decorum. You can be a celebrity but accept decorum,” Dhankhar stated, making it clear that the dignity of the House must be preserved above personal sensitivities.
Dhankhar’s response was not only appropriate but necessary. As the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, he has a duty to ensure that all members adhere to the protocols and respect the institution they serve. His stance reflects a commitment to upholding the standards of parliamentary behavior, which is crucial for the smooth functioning of democracy.
Further into the debate, Bachchan raised another objection regarding the use of her husband’s name in her middle name. Once again, Chairman Dhankhar addressed the matter with clarity and precision, explaining that there is a formal process for changing one’s name in official records, including those maintained by the Election Commission.

“There is a process to change your name that appears on the election certificate and that is submitted here (Rajya Sabha),” Dhankhar pointed out, highlighting that the issue was not personal but procedural. By doing so, he effectively neutralized the argument and reinforced the importance of following due process in official matters.
Jagdeep Dhankhar’s handling of the situation in the Rajya Sabha was both measured and authoritative. He stood firm in his role as the Chairman, prioritizing the decorum of the House over individual sensitivities. His response to Jaya Bachchan’s objections was not only justified but also a necessary reminder that in the halls of Parliament, the rules and procedures must be respected by all, regardless of their personal or professional backgrounds. Dhankhar’s actions should be seen as a defense of parliamentary integrity, ensuring that the focus remains on governance and not on personal grievances.
