In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court of India has decided not to delay the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for Postgraduates (NEET-PG) exam, which is set to take place on August 11. The decision came after a group of petitioners sought a postponement, citing the inconvenience caused by the allocation of exam cities, which they argued would be challenging for many candidates to travel to on such short notice.
The petitioners pointed out that candidates were informed of their specific exam centers only on August 8, leaving them with just a few days to make travel arrangements. Additionally, they expressed concerns about the exam being scheduled in both morning and afternoon sessions, which could further exacerbate the difficulties for those assigned to distant cities.
However, the Supreme Court bench, led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud and including Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, dismissed the plea, stressing the importance of maintaining the exam schedule. The justices underscored that postponing the exam would have serious repercussions for the larger student population, which numbers around two lakh. The court strongly said “How can we postpone such an exam? Nowadays people just come asking to postpone the exam. It’s not a perfect world. We are not academic experts.”

Furthermore, this decision might have come in order to address the previous postponement of the entrance exam for post-graduate medical courses which was supposed to be held on June 23 due to precautionary measures amid the row over the irregularities in NEET-UG. Therefore, another postponement would cost more people than a few petitioners.
This event highlights a strong question in front of us, is it fair enough to ask for postponement for the exam because of a few students, or is just not so obvious the reason the students should seek the Supreme Court?
