The ad-hoc division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has postponed its verdict on Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s appeal for a joint silver medal in the women’s 50kg wrestling category at the Paris Olympics 2024. Vinesh will learn the outcome of her appeal on August 13.
“The ad-hoc division of CAS has extended the time for the Sole Arbitrator Hon. Dr. Annabelle Bennett to deliver a decision until 6:00 p.m. on August 13, 2024,” read an IOA statement.
Vinesh Phogat, represented by senior advocates Harish Salve and Vidushpat Singhania, filed an appeal demanding a joint silver medal with Cuban wrestler Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, who replaced her in the summit clash after losing to Vinesh in the semifinals. Vinesh contended that she was within the prescribed weight limit during her bouts.
“Since the matter is sub-judice, IOA can only state that Sole Arbitrator Dr. Annabelle Bennett AC SC (Australia) heard all parties – applicant Vinesh Phogat, respondents United World Wrestling and the International Olympic Committee, and IOA as an interested party – over three hours,” the IOA stated. “The operative part of the order may be expected soon, with a detailed order to follow.”
PT Usha, head of the IOA, expressed gratitude to Salve, Singhania, and the Krida Legal team for their support during the hearing. She reaffirmed the IOA’s unwavering support for Vinesh, regardless of the outcome, and praised her achievements in wrestling.
Earlier, the CAS indicated a decision could be expected before the end of the Games. Vinesh, announcing her retirement after challenging her disqualification, cited a lack of strength to continue. IOC President Thomas Bach commented on the situation, expressing understanding for Vinesh but raising questions about setting precedents for similar concessions in the future.
