On Saturday, President Droupadi Murmu received the Grand Collar of the Order of Timor-Leste, the highest civilian award from Timor-Leste. This award is a recognition of her outstanding achievements in public service, particularly in the areas of education, social welfare, and women’s empowerment.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed pride in this honor, highlighting its significance in reflecting the strong and respectful relationship between India and Timor-Leste. In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, PM Modi noted that the award also acknowledges President Murmu’s extensive contributions to public life over the years.

President Murmu’s visit to Timor-Leste marks an important milestone as it is the first time an Indian Head of State has visited the Southeast Asian country. Following her arrival on Saturday, she was warmly welcomed by Timor-Leste’s President Jose Ramos-Horta at the airport. In a special touch, cheerful children greeted her as she made her way from the airport to her accommodations.
During her visit, President Murmu held a bilateral meeting with President Ramos-Horta in Dili. The two leaders discussed ways to further enhance the cooperation between their nations. This meeting underscores the strong ties and mutual respect between India and Timor-Leste.
Additionally, President Murmu addressed the Indian community in Dili, further strengthening connections with the diaspora. She was also given a ceremonial reception and a guard of honor at the Presidential Palace in Dili, highlighting the importance of her visit.
The visit, which came at the invitation of President Ramos-Horta, included discussions on various opportunities to deepen the bilateral relationship between India and Timor-Leste.
