Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri arrived in Kathmandu, Nepal, on Sunday, August 11, 2024, for a two-day official visit. The purpose of his visit is to enhance the relationship between India and Nepal and explore ways to work together more closely for mutual benefit. Misri’s visit comes at the invitation of his Nepali counterpart, Sewa Lamsal.
Upon his arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, Foreign Secretary Misri was warmly received by Sewa Lamsal, the Nepali Foreign Secretary. The welcoming ceremony took place at the VIP Lounge of the airport, where both officials exchanged greetings.
The Indian Embassy in Nepal highlighted the significance of this visit on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter). The embassy’s post emphasized that Misri’s visit is in line with India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy, which prioritizes strong ties with neighboring countries.
The embassy stated, “Foreign Secretary @VikramMisri arrives in Kathmandu for an official visit from August 11-12, 2024. Warm reception by Foreign Secretary Ms. Sewa Lamsal @sewa_lamsal.” The post also noted that the visit underscores the tradition of regular high-level interactions between the two nations.

During his stay in Nepal, Foreign Secretary Misri is scheduled to meet with several high-level dignitaries. The focus of these meetings will be on strengthening the already strong ties between the two neighboring countries and discussing areas of cooperation that could benefit both sides. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal also released a statement, noting that this visit is part of the ongoing tradition of exchanging visits between the two friendly nations.

However, according to a source from the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, no official agreements or significant decisions are expected to be made during this visit. The source clarified that this is primarily an introductory visit and a courtesy call by the Indian Foreign Secretary. There are no major official engagements planned during this time.
Foreign Secretary Misri is expected to conclude his visit and depart from Kathmandu on August 12, 2024. The visit, though short, is seen as an important step in maintaining and furthering the strong ties between India and Nepal.
