On August 12, 2024, India and Australia took a significant step in their fight against terrorism by holding the 14th meeting of their Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism in Delhi. Both countries strongly condemned terrorism in all its forms and stressed the need for enhanced international cooperation to tackle this global threat effectively.

During this crucial meeting, India and Australia’s top counter-terrorism experts, KD Dewal from India’s Ministry of External Affairs and Richard Feakes from Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, discussed various aspects of global counter-terrorism. They focused on the pressing challenges posed by new and emerging technologies used by terrorists, the misuse of the internet for terror-related activities, and issues related to radicalization and terror financing.

The experts also addressed the troubling link between organized crime and terrorism. This comprehensive dialogue allowed both countries to share insights on their domestic, regional, and global terrorism threat assessments, which is vital for understanding and combating terrorism more effectively.

International Cooperation and Its Importance

The collaboration between India and Australia highlights a broader commitment to international cooperation in the fight against terrorism. Both nations agreed on the importance of working together in regional, global, and multilateral forums such as the United Nations, the Global Counterterrorism Forum (GCTF), the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), and with QUAD partners.

This cooperation is more than just a strategic alliance; it reflects a deep commitment to safeguarding national and global security. By strengthening ties and sharing information, India and Australia can better protect their citizens from the evolving threats of terrorism.

Impact on Nationalism

For both India and Australia, this enhanced cooperation is a key element in reinforcing national security and sovereignty. For India, playing a leading role in this collaboration underscores its commitment to global peace and security while reinforcing its position as a major player on the world stage. This proactive approach not only boosts India’s security posture but also enhances its international reputation.

For Australia, the partnership with India reflects its dedication to combating global terrorism and securing its national interests. By working closely with India, Australia strengthens its own counter-terrorism strategies and contributes to global stability.

The meeting concluded with an agreement to hold the 15th Joint Working Group meeting in Canberra at a mutually convenient date. This ongoing dialogue underscores the importance of sustained cooperation and reinforces the strategic partnership between the two countries.

In addition to counter-terrorism efforts, the sixth India-Maritime Security Dialogue was also held in Canberra earlier in the day, focusing on ensuring a secure maritime environment that supports global growth and well-being.

The strengthened India-Australia counter-terrorism cooperation is a testament to their joint commitment to fighting terrorism and safeguarding their nations. This collaboration not only enhances their security but also contributes to global peace and stability, showcasing the vital role both countries play on the international stage.
